Who’s your living legend?

September 30, 2008

I’ve got a lot of heroes – Matt Chandler (man crush), Francis Chan, Boomer Esiason, my Nissan Sentra.  But one person has risen above “hero status” and inspired me to live a whole different kind of life of following Christ.  Hebrews 13:7 says,

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

This passage is a command in Scripture to find people that have left everything to follow Jesus and elevate those people to “living legend” status.  Mine is John Piper.

Although I don’t agree with everything he says, in a time when it was very unpopular to be a theological pastor and very popular to be a “cool” pastor, John has sounded a clarion call for pastors to be lovers of good doctrine and has purposefully avoided being seen as cool.  To my knowledge, he owns one jacket – a gray tweed number, circa 1985.  Although his books sell like Sarah Palin glasses and he’s one of the most sought-after conference speakers around, Dr. Piper has chosen to live in a poor, urban part of Minneapolis and donate all of his book and speaking money to his church for Kingdom purposes.

Spiritual or not, who would you consider your living legend?
