House Rules, Wk 2 – The Air We Breathe

In a great gathering yesterday for The Bridge, we reached the halfway point in our House Rules series that’s setting us up for 2009 by talking about “The Air We Breathe – Grace”.  Of all the things that I think could protect us from Satan’s attacks this year, this is the most important.

Talking through Ephesians 4:30-32, we said a lot of things but were are the biggies…

  1. Everything will not be right between you and God unless you’re willing to make things right between you and everybody else.
  2. Having a heart of grace isn’t something you can do on your own – you need a “heart transplant” at the hands of God.
  3. People are sinful and so are you.  EXPECT to need to forgive.
  4. What goes in, comes out.  To grow in grace, digest the message of the gospel all your life.

Churches get divided over stupid, stupid things – what side of the sanctuary the organ is going to sit on, personality traits of Leadership Staff Members (unfortunately for you, you have a weird pastor), what color carpet a building is going to have (yes, I’m serious).

Not us.  Not if we breathe grace.  Here are the three things that I ripped off from Pete Wilson that we should always keep in mind…

Nobody’s perfect.  Everybody’s welcome.  Anything’s possible.

Those are attitudes of grace.

UPDATE: I’m adding a question.  What is the silliest thing you’ve ever seen division over in a church setting?  Hopefully this won’t get too discouraging…

Your words on GRACE were so spirit filled. We often find ourselves trying to justify our lack of forgiveness with multitudes of reasons: that wasn’t fair, I didn’t deserve to be treated that way, or it wasn’t my fault THEN we move into: he did that on purpose, she doesn’t deserve my forgiveness, I’m the victim etc. etc.. Until we accept God’s grace as the all encompassing, undeserved, pure love that it is..and truly live it…breathe it..and share it…forgiveness will be difficult for us. Lack of forgiveness separates us from God and I for one don’t want to be separated from the ONE for gave it ALL for me! Grace..Grace…GOD’s GRACE!!
    Keep preaching it brother!!!!

You asked about the silliest reason we’ve seen for church division- I didn’t personally witness it but heard about a church that split over the color of the carpet. How sad!
