We need to be on our knees right now.

I’ve had people ask before if there was a specific time during the year that I would want them to fast and pray for The Bridge. If you were ever going to fast and pray on our behalf, I would submit that we’re entering that season now.

For over five months (just checked my journal), I’ve been praying that as The Bridge has grown God would raise up more Godly, Bible-saturated, courageous men within The Bridge to shepherd and lead as elders and we’re starting the process of identifying the man or men that God is raising up this Sunday.

To drive home the weight and seriousness of this decision for us as a church, consider these things about the man or men that we appoint as elders…

  • These men will stand before God someday and give an account for the souls of Bridge members.
  • It will be the Biblical RESPONSIBILITY of these men to point out your sin to you.  Your blood is on their head if they don’t. (Acts 20:26 referencing Ezekiel 3:18 and dozens of other NT Scriptures about church discipline)
  • Millions of dollars, the direction of countless man-hours invested in The Kingdom, the spiritual well-being of hundreds of souls, The Bridge’s growth and/or church-planting strategy to make Christ famous throughout the nations – all of them will be directed and shaped by these men.
  • Every new Christian that God brings us in the years to come will be looking to these men in their spiritual infancy as an example of what it means to follow Christ.

The third week of our Vintage Church series this Sunday will be on “Biblical Eldership” and after the teaching we’ll be taking nominations for men that meet the Biblical standards for an elder in Jesus’ church to begin this process.

Bridge family, please be praying.  Blog-family, we covet your prayers right now too.  God is doing a lot in our midst and momentum is high.  A good decision could lead to years of fruitful ministry and Kingdom advancement.  A bad decision could lead to nothing short of Kingdom disaster.  Pray for God’s men to become clear to us as a church.

UPDATE: just got an email from a Bridger asking for Scripture to study as they pray and ask God to lead them to a person to nominate this weekend.  For relevant texts see 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-5, 1 Timothy 5:17-19, and Hebrews 13:17.

As your far away friend and daily pray-er for The Bridge I will certainly be lifting up the church as it follows the Spirit’s guidance for Elders, a “noble calling.”

Thanks, Matt! Looking forward to a Svoboda sighting at The Bridge coupled with late-night hours of epic spades tournaments.
