lives not wasted

August 10, 2009

These two news stories from this week are both sad AND cause for joy.  These men and women didn’t waste their lives – they lived and died for a worthy Lord.  They would not change a thing about their deaths for every treasure, vacation, promotion, affirmation, or comfort this world could offer them at this moment.

Scripture ALWAYS holds true…

“Whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” [John 16:2]

This was so difficult for me to read as I am constantly reminded how little we in the U. S. suffer for the cause of Christ. I wonder what kind of movement would be started if we were willing.

Last week I was leading a conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Obviously, there is much discrimination toward Christians in the area. What most people don’t realize is that, when someone becomes a biblical follower of Jesus and leaves the Mormon faith, if they own a business, they are targeted and left without a constituency. There is a concerted effort by the church to punish those who leave the Mormon tradition. One conversation I had pointed out that one man who had chosen to become a Christian was unwilling to tell anyone because he would lose all he had worked for, having built a successful business. When I heard this I silently considered… “Is this the reason Christianity in the U.S. is dying?” Martyrdom has been God’s way of building, not diminishing His Kingdom, since the crucifixion.

But I must confess… This comes from someone who has never been asked to suffer significantly for the cause of Christ.
