why I believe the gospel

December 8, 2009

Here goes…

1. I’ve genuinely encountered God, who has devastated me with The Cross and healed me with the gospel.  His presence in my life is the greatest confirmation of the truth of the gospel.

2. The worldview that arises from the New Testament makes more sense of more reality than any other worldview.

3. Nobody has ever explained the empty tomb of Jesus in the hostile environment of Jerusalem where the enemies of Jesus would have given anything to produce the corpse, but could not.  In the words of former atheist Antony Flew…

“The evidence for the resurrection is better than for claimed miracles in any other religion. It’s outstandingly different in quality and quantity, I think, from the evidence offered for the occurrence of most other supposedly miraculous events… Christians have a good many reasons for believing Jesus did, in fact, raise from the dead.”

4. Fulfilled prophecy out of Jesus’ mouth for the purpose of gospel-confirmation.  Secular historians all sneer at this and claim that the New Testament “predicts” the destruction of the Jerusalem temple because it was written after the destruction of the temple.  But it’s more than just a little lame that the only reason they date the authorship to after the temple destruction is because they presuppose the destruction couldn’t have been prophetically predicted.

5. The apostles – to a man – were willing to die for their belief that Jesus rose from the dead. People don’t die for something they know is a lie.  A muslim man may be willing to die in jihad for his faith, but he believes it’s true.  There is not the remotest possibility that the apostles could’ve believed they saw a risen Jesus without it being true – and yet they died for that belief.

6. The early church was an indomitable force of faith and love and sacrifice on the basis of the reality of Jesus Christ.

7. The prophecies of the Old Testament find stunning fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus.  Stunning.

8. Cynical opponents to Christianity abounded where Paul and the other New Testament authors made claims that hundreds of eyewitnesses of the resurrection were living. See what Paul said to people who were doubting the resurrection HERE.

9. It’s remarkable uniqueness.  In the face of every religion on earth screaming “DO! DO! DO”, a bleeding Jesus hangs from the cross and proclaims, “DONE” in the gospel.  This is subtle, but the gospel is unequivocally not something someone would make up.
