welcoming a new family member

January 7, 2010

I can’t believe I waited until today to post this, but we’re welcoming a new addition to the Howerton home…

Jack Howerton

Jack Howerton – Rat Terrier, 2lbs – was my Christmas present to Jana this year and it was BY FAR the most fun I’ve ever had giving someone a gift.  However, after two weeks of ownership I can tell you that these are the reasons you need another puppy in addition to your current dog…

  1. You don’t have enough urine in your carpet fibers
  2. You like the smell of dog feces
  3. Diarrhea on your living room carpet is actually pretty cool to you
  4. You think your dog is too happy and calm so you need to get a puppy to induce jealousy and all the negative behavior that accompanies it in a dog
  5. When someone comes to the door, just one dog jumping up at them and barking isn’t enough for you
  6. The sound of a yelping, whining dog who isn’t used to sleeping in a cage crate is soothing and sleep-inducing to you and your spouse
  7. It helps keep your mind sharp to have something 5 inches tall wandering around that you can never take your eyes off of
  8. Standing outside in 10 degree weather yelling “Go potty!” like a maniac is a nice break from your normal life

Thank you, Josh, for totally reminding me why we do NOT need a dog again! 🙂 We’ll just come to your house for our dog fix.

Seth: smarter aleck comment “Dad that’s an insult to the puppy!”

Remind me not to lay on your floor. OK, I will because I love Jack and Boomer and that is where we play, on the floor.

That was so funny. Just think of it as preparing you for parenthood one day – except the dog is a whole lot easier! Thanks for the laugh. 🙂

He is precious, but not good at learning where to potty and not to. Boomer was so good at potty training, but Jack will have to learn. Other than the potty problem, he’s been a great puppy, so anyone who is thinking about getting a dog, don’t get discouraged by Josh’s post! Dogs are so worth the effort you put into them.
@Lance- Don’t worry Lance, as soon as he’s potty trained, my carpet will be cleaned, even if I have to rent something to do it myself!

Funny, I have found myself saying some of these same things regarding Emma…especially #7. But seriously, he is a cutie. The kids and I want to meet him!

@Jana – I have a carpet cleaner you can borrow when the time comes.
It was fun meeting Jack – he’s a keeper. But our dog won’t be getting a playmate anytime soon!
